Man wounded after opening fire on police

 

A man is in critical condition after being shot by police in a gunfire exchange Saturday night. A police officer was shot but uninjured because the bullet ricocheted off the officer’s magazine belt, police said.

The exchange occurred around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Chillum and Queens Chapel roads in West Hyattsville. Police were responding to several calls reporting a man “acting erratic” in the area and throwing things at cars and banging on store windows. When police arrived, the man opened fire and several officers returned fire, police said. The man was taken to a nearby hospital.

Man attacked while stopping fight on Metro; five arrested

Five males were arrested after assaulting a safety patrol volunteer who was attempting to break up a fight Saturday night at the Anacostia Metro station. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in a train that was stopped on the station platform, according to a statement from the Guardian Angels, a volunteer group that patrols Metro stations.

Alexandrew Kaufer, a Guardian Angels member, was attempting to break up a fight between a white woman and a black teen when two other youths and two men intervened and began assaulting him. The attack was broken up when more Guardian Angels arrived and detained the assailants. Metro police arrested all five males, according to Metro.

Police ID slain yoga store employee

Montgomery County police said Jayna Troxel Murray, 30, was the homicide victim in a Friday night attack at a Bethesda yoga store in which another employee was sexually assaulted. The attack occurred around 10 p.m. Friday at Lululemon Athletica, a yoga studio and athletic apparel store. The second victim, a 27-year-old whose name has not been released, was still in the hospital as of Sunday.
