Hyattsville man arrested for immigration scam

A Hyattsville man has been arrested in connection with an alleged immigration scam, police said.

Ousseynou Kamara, 41, was charged with identity theft, six felony counts of obtaining money by false pretenses and two counts of forgery, Fairfax County police said.

In October, Kamara allegedly approached two women in a parking lot at Landmark Plaza and told them he was affiliated with the World Bank and could grant citizenship.

Authorities said he offered to fly one woman’s siblings to the United States from Africa for $10,000. The woman handed over cash to Kamara on several occasions but never received the services Kamara promised.

Kamara told the other woman he could buy her a green card. She also paid him in increments, police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said, but she never got a green card from him.

On May 13, police were contacted when the women were confronting Kamara in the parking lot and demanding that they get their money back. An investigation found that there are additional victims of Kamara’s scam who have not reported the incidents to police.
