Man fatally struck by train

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a MARC train in Gaithersburg as he was trying to cross the tracks.

 

Police identified the man Saturday as Ricardo Antonio Levia Aldana, 51.

He was hit by a train that was traveling toward Frederick near North Frederick Avenue and West Diamond Avenue shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, according to Montgomery County police.

Police said the death appears to be accidental. Aldana tried to cross the tracks after a CSX freight train passed on one set of tracks, and was then struck by a MARC train that was traveling the opposite direction.


Fairfax authorities probe trash fires

Fairfax County authorities are looking for the person who has intentionally set at least 15 trash bins on fire in the Culmore area since February.

Police say the same person is believed to be responsible for the fires, which have occurred between Feb. 6 and July 10.

All of the blazes took place in the late evening or early-morning hours.

Ten dumpster fires were reported on the 6000 block of Knollwood Drive; three on the 6000 block of Vista Drive; one on the 3300 block of Glenmore Drive; and one on the 3400 block of Glen Carlyn Drive.

Assistant principal indicted in child pornography case

An assistant principal at a Virginia elementary school has been indicted on three child pornography charges.

Joshua Myers, an assistant principal at Greenville Elementary School in Fauquier County, is charged with two counts of distributing child pornography and one count of receiving child pornography.

Myers, 29, allegedly viewed and shared sexually explicit images, including a young boy being raped by a man and a woman sexually abusing a toddler, court records say.
