A Silver Spring man faces firearms-related charges after police officers spotted him jaywalking, police said.
Foday Abdulai Gassama, 21, is charged with firearms-related charges and with failing to comply with the lawful order of a police officer, Montgomery County police said. He is being held on a $5,000 bond.
About 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, officers spotted four people jaywalking on Bel Pre Road in Aspen Hill, police said. When an officer stopped the four people, Gassama, who had a red and black backpack, immediately started running away.
The officer who had stopped the group chased Gassama, and Gassama was eventually apprehended by another officer at the intersection of Chesterfield Road and Bel Pre Road. Gassama was no longer carrying the backpack, police said, but officers found it in a trash can nearby where two children were playing.
The backpack contained a handgun and a magazine with additional ammunition. Police spokeswoman Officer Janelle Smith said Gassama has been convicted on a charge that does not allow him to carry a weapon.
