At least 25 “disorderly” people surrounded Anne Arundel police officers trying to arrest a suspect in Severn, resulting in officers being called in to help from throughout the county along with a police helicopter, police said.
Two officers on bike patrol were in the area of Durness Court — where residents have complained about drug activity, police said — shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday and noticed a crowd of men huddled together.
One of the men was identified as Carlyle Emmanuel Brooks, 18, who is under house arrest on drug and handgun charges.
As officers approached the group, Brooks reached for his waistband, police said.
When officers ordered him to raise his hands, Brooks hit one of the officers and ran away, police said.
Brooks was chased into his house in Durness Court, where he continued to fight the officers and was joined by five other people in the house, police said.
Officers subdued and arrested Brooks, but as they brought him out of the house, a crowd of 20 people surrounded the officers and threatened them, police said.
Additional officers arrived, but were outnumbered, police said. Police in a helicopter helped pick out those who were assaulting the officers.
One man, Ricky Dejaun Jones, hit one officer in the mouth and was subdued with a Taser, police said.
Jones was treated for the Taser strike, and two officers sustained minor injuries, police said.
“It is our intent to effect an arrest with the minimal amount of force, and our officers returned the amount of force needed to subdue the individuals,” said Sgt. John Gilmer, the department’s spokesman.
It is unknown if any contraband was found during the incident, Gilmer said.
In addition to Brooks and Jones, Kendra Latia Simms, 21, and Lionel Demetreus Green, 19, both of Severn, were arrested for disorderly conduct.
Another county law enforcement officer was assaulted Thursday while trying to make an arrest.
A county sheriff’s deputy pulled over Michael William Byrne, who had an open warrant for assault, Thursday night on Woodland Beach Road in Pasadena, the sheriff’s department said.
As the deputy was arresting Byrne, who was compliant at first, the Pasadena man elbowed the deputy in the face, breaking the deputy’s glasses and cutting his face, the department said.
Byrne continued to hit the deputy and escaped, but was detained after a brief chase. Seven additional charges were added to Byrne’s record, including second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer.
