D.C. police ID shooting victim

 

District police have identified the man fatally shot near Rock Creek Cemetery.

Police said 32-year-old Marcellus Darnaby was killed on the 300 block of Delafield Place NW.

The slaying happened at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Darnaby was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Hundreds cited in HOV crackdown

Hundreds of motorists in Maryland and Virginia were cited in a high-occupancy vehicle crackdown on area highways.

The one-day enforcement initiative took place during the morning and evening rush hours on Tuesday. Police targeted the HOV lanes on the Dulles Toll Road and Interstates 66, 95 and 395 in Virginia and Interstate 270 and Route 50 in Maryland.

In total, 777 people were cited or arrested in the two states, according to Virginia State Police. Of those, 575 were for HOV violations. The others were cited for violations that included speeding, reckless driving, driving with a revoked or invalid license and DUI and drug offenses.

Police: ‘Suspicious’ death was from natural causes

Fairfax County police say a woman whose death was initially considered suspicious died of natural causes.

Officers were asked to check on the welfare of a woman who lived on the 8400 block of Sugar Creek Lane in Springfield on Wednesday afternoon and found the woman dead in her home. Police originally believed the death was suspicious and homicide investigators were sent to the scene.

Police said an autopsy was conducted Thursday, and a medical examiner determined that 47-year-old Cherylanne Pierre died of natural causes.
