Crime History: ‘Preppie Murder’ attack in NYC’s Central Park

On this date, Aug. 26, in 1986, 19-year-old Robert Chambers killed 18-year-old Jennifer Levin after having sex in New York’s Central Park in a case dubbed “the Preppie Murder.”

The case had everything the tabloids craved: exclusive parties, kinky sex, drugs and drinking, a pretty victim and a handsome killer.

The 6-foot-4 bad boy claimed he and Levin were having intercourse, and when she tied his hands with her panties and painfully squeezed his genitals, he accidently killed her.

The defense claimed that Jennifer was sex-crazed and infatuated by Chambers.

The jury deliberated for nine days. Fearful of a mistrial, prosecutors allowed Chambers to plead guilty to a less-serious manslaughter charge.

He served 15 years in prison.
