The balding bank robber who earned the moniker of the “Granddad Bandit” has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for robbing two Virginia banks, as well as 23 others in 13 other states.
Prosecutors said 53-year-old Michael Francis Mara was also ordered to pay more than $83,000 in restitution.
Mara pleaded guilty in February, and prosecutors and the defense agreed on the 25-year sentence then. Mara will not face charges in the other states.
The FBI nicknamed Mara — who is balding, has gray hair and wears glasses — the “Granddad Bandit” to help the public identify him during a nationwide campaign to apprehend him. Prosecutors said the robberies occurred from December 2008 to July 2010.
