Energy dept. official faked hotel receipts

A former director of safety management for the United States Department of Energy has pleaded guilty to submitting phony travel reimbursements to make a few extra dollars.

Chuan-Fu Wu, who oversaw safety issue nuclear management, radiation protection and other programs, was charged last week with misdemeanor conversion of public money. He faces up to a year in prison.

According to charging documents, Wu submitted phony hotel receipts totaling $760 for separate visits to Knoxville, Tenn., in 2008 and 2009. Prosecutors said Wu did not stay at the hotels, but instead stayed with friends for free.

Police have identified the man charged in a shooting at a gas station in Germantown.

Dmytro Solomatin, 26, of Reston, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Montgomery County Police said Solomatin and another man got into an argument while pumping gas at the Freestate gas station at 20650 Frederick Road around 6 p.m. Saturday. The argument escalated into a physical altercation, and the suspect grabbed a handgun from his vehicle.

Solomatin fired one shot at the victim, which struck the victim’s vehicle, police said.
