Woman pleads guilty in glass-eating scheme

A woman has pleaded guilty to a scheme in which she and her husband ate glass pieces, then submitted false insurance claims in the District, Maryland, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Mary Evano pleaded guilty in a Massachusetts federal court to a 23-count indictment that charged her with fraud, conspiracy and related offenses. She is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 21.

Court documents say she and her husband, Ronald, collected more than $200,000 in compensation after filing insurance claims falsely saying that they had been injured by restaurants, hotels and grocery stores that served them food that contained glass pieces.

Authorities say the pair also incurred more than $100,000 in unpaid medical bills.

Ronald Evano pleaded guilty in 2007.
