Mark Depatie, 44, started his career at the age of 17 when he joined the Marines. He attended the Prince William County Police Academy in 2002 and joined the force in 2003.
Last year, Depatie was honored with a 2008 Valor award for service “beyond the call of duty.”
What events led to your winning the award?
I responded to a scene where it was a domestic situation. There was a large amount of blood, and the individual who had been injured was no longer there.
I literally followed the blood trail and was able to locate him a couple miles away.
He was bleeding from the head, so I provided first aid right there and transported him to the hospital.
Why did he flee the scene?
He got in a fight with his girlfriend’s son, [who wounded him]. He didn’t want any police involvement. It happens often.
What did you learn from the experience?
I learned that you feel really gratified when you save someone’s life who is in dire need.
What brought you to Prince William County?
I’m originally from Chicago. I joined the Marines when I was 17, and that’s what brought me out to Virginia. I retired out of Quantico and wanted to serve where I live.
Why did you become an officer, and what’s the best part of your job?
I did my 20 years in the Marines and wanted to continue public service. The best part is the daily action and helping citizens.
What are your future plans?
To stay on the department and keep doing what I do.
