Student admits to shooting at teacher

A Northern Virginia Community College student admitted shooting at his math professor on campus.

Jason Hamilton, 21, pleaded guilty to attempted murder in Prince William County Circuit Court on Monday. Police said Hamilton fired two shots at a math professor at the Woodbridge campus in December 2009 because he was upset over his grade. He faces two to 20 years in prison.

Police said at the time of the incident that the shooting could have turned deadly but the rifle jammed. The professor was able to duck under a desk. No one was injured.

Hamilton had purchased the Marlin bolt-action rifle from a store a day before the shooting, police said.
