P.G. firefighters get American Legion awards

Two Prince George’s County fire and emergency services employees are set to receive awards from the American Legion.

Paramedic Pamela J. Graham has been named the organization’s emergency medical service worker of the year for 2010 in Prince George’s County and for the southern Maryland district. And firefighter and medic Capt. James M. Jiron is the American Legion’s firefighter of the year for the county and district.

Graham was selected for making five saves in a three-month period, the fire department said. She is also taking college courses and is involved in community service. Graham, who is assigned to the Clinton fire and emergency services station, is being considered for the America Legion’s state award.

The fire department said Jiron is being honored for saving two people in Woodstock, Va., while off-duty in September 2010. Jiron was at a family celebration when he saw black smoke coming from the back of a nearby apartment building on Sept. 11, according to the Shenandoah County Department of Fire and Rescue.

Jiron had a relative call 911 as he entered the burning home, rescuing a man who was asleep on the couch and another man who was upstairs in the home. Both men escaped from the blaze unharmed.

Jiron also propped a table against a doorway to slow down the fire. The smoke detectors in the home weren’t working, the Shenandoah fire department said.

Jiron is assigned to the College Park station in Prince George’s County.

Graham and Jiron are scheduled to receive their county awards on April 11 and the southern Maryland district awards on May 1.
