A District man who confronted two men and shot one of them in September 2010 was sentenced Friday to over 27 years in prison, officials said.
Ernest Johnson, 26, was convicted in D.C. Superior Court of assault with intent to kill while armed and 13 other charges in March, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
On Sept. 25 2010, Johnson and his girlfriend drove to a parking lot in the 4500 block of Livingston Road SE, and Johnson exited the car to pick up his girlfriend’s children.
When Johnson was heading back to the car, he argued with another man, prosecutors said. He threatened the man with a sawed-off shotgun or rifle-like weapon that he took out of the backseat of his girlfriend’s car, where two children were sitting.
Johnson’s girlfriend tried to drive herself and Johnson away, but a second man’s vehicle blocked her car. Johnson got out of the car he was in and shot this man in his arm. As the man tried to run away, Johnson shot at him again, prosecutors said.
After the incident, Johnson tried to prevent his girlfriend from cooperating with authorities. Officials said that Johnson was on probation for two counts of armed robbery at the time of the incident.
