Ex-city worker took $20,000, is fined $250 A former official with the District of Columbia Public Schools grants office who took a $20,300 check in exchange for awarding a contract to a friend’s company was sentenced this week to 24 months probation and given a $250 fine, the D.C. Office of the Inspector General announced.

Charles White, a former senior management and program analyst, pleaded guilty in August to supplementation of government salary.

In 2008, White solicited bids for a renovation project at J.O. Wilson Elementary School. He informed a friend who ran a child care company about the project. The friend submitted a bid for the renovation project and got the contract, despite no experience with renovation work, the FBI said.

MontCo man denies involvement in Aruba disappearance

The Gaithersburg man released from Aruban custody after having been detained for four months said Thursday that he had nothing to do with his traveling partner’s disappearance.

Gary Giordano, 50, returned to the United States on Wednesday. In an interview on “Good Morning America,” he wouldn’t detail exactly what happened Aug. 2, the last day 35-year-old Robyn Gardner, of Frederick, was seen alive. But he was “absolutely not” involved in her disappearance, he said.

Giordano said he had a $1.5 million accidental-death insurance policy on Gardner because it was part of a travel insurance package that covered both of them.

Police: Md. man scammed vulnerable adults

Montgomery County police say a Riverdale man is accused of scamming at least four vulnerable adults out of thousands of dollars.

Police said 50-year-old Deshaune T. Johnson exploited people with mental or physical disabilities by promising them jobs and asking them to help pay his bills.

In total, police said, he bilked the four victims out of about $10,000.
