Two police officers were shot and killed outside Los Angeles Tuesday night.
The officers were members of the El Monte Police Department. They were responding to a call about a possible stabbing at the Siesta Inn motel, near the intersection of Garvey and Central avenues, about 14 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, when they immediately took gunfire upon arrival by an adult male gunman, according to authorities. The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by gunfire, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

“There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers,” the City of El Monte, the El Monte Police Department, and the El Monte Police Officers Association said in a statement. “It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families. We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring support we have received in the last few hours.”
The incident occurred at approximately 4:47 p.m. local time. The officers struck by gunfire were transported to LAC+USC Medical Center, where they died from their injuries. The identities of the fallen officers have not been released by authorities, but one officer was a 22-year veteran, while the other was with the department for less than a year, according to the El Monte Police Department.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the shooting.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 120 police officers have died in the line of duty in 2022, and 24 of the deaths have been the result of gunfire.
