P.G. officer pleads to extortion scheme
A former Prince George’s County police officer pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit extortion in a scheme to distribute millions of dollars worth of untaxed cigarettes.
The conspirators paid Chong Chen Kim in 2009 while he was on the force to ensure the safe transport of the cigarettes in Maryland and Virginia. Kim and others sold the contraband to people in New York, where taxes on cigarettes are more than $8 a pack.
Kim, 43, faces five years to life at his sentencing scheduled for Dec. 9.
