McKee was murdered in April while covering “serious rioting” in Northern Ireland. Police placed the blame on an Irish Republican Army splinter group called the New IRA The death came a day after authorities carried out searches in Londonderry, which republicans in the heavily Catholic city often refer to as “Derry.” Riots occurred as a result of the searches and McKee was shot by perpetrators allegedly firing at police.

McKee, who was 29, was a rising star in the journalism community and listed in Forbes’ “30 Under 30 Europe” list in 2016 for her investigative journalism.
Irish President Michael Higgins called McKee’s murder “an attack on truth itself.”
