A 61-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years on charges stemming from a home invasion in which he assaulted a 72-year-old man.
Walter Harris, former of Sterling, was convicted in December by a D.C. jury of first-degree burglary, aggravated assault, robbery and assault with bodily injury. The jury also found that Harris should be subjected to a stiffer sentence for attacking a senior citizen.
According to prosecutors, Harris broke into an apartment building for senior citizens in the 900 block of Varney Street SE in July 2011.
Harris demanded money from the victim, then beat him about the face and head until he briefly lost consciousness, police said.
When a neighbor came to check on the victim, Harris fled the scene, taking the victim’s wallet, credit cards and other property.
