Prince George’s County police fatally shot a Hyattsville man early Tuesday, ending a tense seven-hour standoff in which the man fired on police and emergency crews.
Brook T. Genet, 29, was shot after he leapt from an apartment window while brandishing a handgun, police said. He was transported to a local hospital where he died a short time later.
The ordeal started about 10:30 p.m. Monday, when officers got a report of a man shooting a handgun at the apartment complex behind The Mall at Prince George’s. A neighbor told police that the gunman fired his weapon during an altercation in the parking lot, according to spokesman Cpl. Stephen Pacheco.
When the officers arrived on the scene, Genet was firing a semiautomatic weapon in the air. The man turned his handgun on them and holed himself up in his apartment, police said.
Police surrounded the area and called in the SWAT team and conflict management team to try to negotiate with the man. Negotiators even played a recording of Genet’s ex-girlfriend pleading for him to surrender, but Genet refused to come out.
Two armored vehicles were called to the scene; one was used to knock out windows. Police even tried sending in a robot outfitted with video equipment.
Genet answered by firing shots, including at an ambulance, police said.
Around 5:30 a.m., after police knocked down the front door, Genet climbed out through a window and tried to run. Authorities say he was still brandishing the gun, and police officers fired on him.
None of the police officers were injured.
The incident is still under investigation. The officers involved in the shooting, assigned to the department’s Special Operations Division, were placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
