On this day, Sept. 27, in 1964, the Warren Commission released its report concluding that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole gunman in the assassination of President John Kennedy.
The commission, named after Chief Justice Earl Warren, who headed the group, presented President Lyndon Johnson its 888-page report about 10 months after Kennedy’s death.
The commission faced much criticism for the methods it used to investigate Kennedy’s death: It barred the public from attending almost all of its hearings, and the full commission was present during the testimony of only one of 94 witnesses.
The report’s findings remain in dispute to this day.
