The Unabomber killed his first victim.
Sacramento computer store owner Hugh Scutton saw a block of wood with nails in it in the parking lot. When he went to move it, an enormous blast detonated, and metal went into Scutton’s heart.
By the time Theodore Kaczynski finally was captured, he had been responsible for the deaths of three people and had injured 23 others.
Kaczynski earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a doctorate from the University of Michigan in mathematics. At 25, he resigned as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and moved to a shack in Montana.
His first bomb was sent to the University of Illinois in 1978. In 1995, the FBI released sketches of the Unabomber in a hood and sunglasses. Kaczynski then sent a letter to The New York Times promising to stop the bombings if that paper or The Washington Post published his manifesto.
Both newspapers ran the piece and Kaczynski’s brother recognized the rants and contacted the FBI. A raid turned up bombs and writings at the cabin. Kaczynski was sentenced to life without parole and is at the “supermax” prison in Colorado.
