On this day, April 22, in 1934, notorious outlaw George “Baby Face” Nelson killed Special Agent W. Carter Baum during an FBI raid in northern Wisconsin.
Nelson wanted to be known as Big George Nelson, but because of his youthful appearance, everyone called him “Baby Face.” But never to his face. Nelson was so violent and erratic, Al Capone booted him from his gang so Nelson teamed up with John Dillinger.
On this day, 75 years ago, agents learned that the Dillinger gang was hiding at Little Bohemia, Wis. While Baum and two other officers took positions at a roadblock, a car approached. Nelson blasted the agents with two handguns.
Nelson was killed in an epic battle after running into two federal agents. Nelson killed both officers but was shot 17 times himself. He died at the age of 25.
