An armored car driver shot a young man who tried to run off with a bag of cash, D.C. police said.
The incident happened around 1 p.m. Monday in the Brentwood neighborhood in Northeast Washington.
“The suspect tried to grab the money bag, and the guard ended up shooting the suspect,” Officer Tisha Gant said.
Police said a Dunbar armored truck pulled in front of Shoe City at 1060 Brentwood Ave. for a cash drop-off. The guard went inside and placed the money bag on the counter. The suspect came up, quickly snatched the bag and ran, police said.
The guard gave chase and fired his weapon, police said, apparently striking the suspect in the lower leg.
The suspect collapsed in the parking lot about 50 feet from the store. The young man was bleeding a great deal from his wound, Gant said, but he was conscious and breathing. He was taken to a hospital.
On Wednesday evening, police had not said whether the suspect had a weapon. Police and FBI agents were still investigating.
Armored car robberies are not uncommon in the District.
¥ Three weeks ago, an armored truck guard was shot in the face during an armed robbery outside a Popeyes restaurant in Southeast Washington. The guard was rushed to the hospital by his partner and was in critical condition. He remains alive.
¥ Early last month, a Brinks armored truck guard was charged with robbing the vehicle she was driving. Police said she helped two gunmen in the heist outside a Wendy’s restaurant in Northeast Washington. The robbers made off with $600,000. Under police questioning, the driver told police that an acquaintance threatened to kill her if she did not help with robbery but that she would receive some of the stolen money if she helped.
¥ In June, an armored truck guard was robbed at gunpoint by two males who had been walking in the 1400 block of 14th Street NW.
¥ In May, armed robbers took money from an armored vehicle in a parking lot in the 600 block of Rhode Island Avenue NE, then fled in a vehicle.
