Tourist charged with animal cruelty for leaving dogs in van

A tourist from Michigan was arrested after he allegedly left two dogs in a hot van for hours while he visited a D.C. museum. One dog died.

Kenneth G. Reiff is accused of leaving Rosie, an 8-year-old Chihuahua, and Pebbles, a 15-year-old Beagle mix, in his van while he and his daughter visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum on Monday, according to the Washington Humane Society. The van was parked on the 1300 block of Independence Avenue SW.

Rosie died in the van and Pebbles was treated for heat stress, the society said.

Court records show that Reiff has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty. His daughter was placed in the custody of child protective services.
