20 years for man who robbed Laundromat twice

A District man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for two armed robberies at a Northeast Washington Laundromat.

Lawrence White, 41, drew a knife on the same employee twice within eight days in August, taking several hundred dollars in both robberies, prosecutors said.

During the second robbery of the business on the 1600 block of Benning Road NE, a surveillance camera captured White running into the office, and then leaving with the money. The video led directly to the identification of White and was followed by his arrest a few days later, prosecutors said.

A D.C. jury convicted White in March of armed robbery and carrying a dangerous weapon.

3 charged in Alexandria carjacking

Three people were arrested after they allegedly carjacked a vehicle in Alexandria early Thursday and headed into the District, authorities said.

Mark Comer, 23, Marcus Crouch, 19, and a 17-year-old youth were each charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and a weapons violation in the District. The three suspects were each also charged in Alexandria with carjacking and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The carjacking happened about 2:10 a.m. Wednesday on the 5100 block of Duke Street.

Document burning is OK, says police chief

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says it’s not improper for the police force to burn documents, as union officials demand an investigation into how police department records came to be placed in trash bins and set on fire.

Lanier told the Associated Press that burning records is a federally accepted method for disposing of documents.

Documents were burned earlier this month at the fire department training academy.

The documents, not all of which were successfully destroyed, contained private information such as medical records and Social Security numbers, union officials said.
