Officer killed in crash

An off-duty D.C. police officer was killed after his car crashed into the back of a fuel truck on Insterstate 270 in Montgomery County Friday.

Jelani Prather, 36, an evening shift motorcycle officer who worked in D.C.’s fifth police district and lived in Rockville, died around 1 p.m. Friday.

Maryland state police said the initial investigation revealed that Prather veered his car, apparently without braking, into a truck resting on the shoulder of I-270. The truck driver saw Prather’s vehicle coming and attempted to drive away, but Prather struck the rear end of the truck and died in the crash.

Woman’s kidnapping tale was a lie

Police said Saturday they now believe that a woman who reported her own kidnapping earlier in the week was not telling the truth.

The injured woman reported that she was abducted by three men in a white van Monday evening, and Fairfax County police asked the public for any information about her alleged assailants. But police determined Saturday that the woman’s injuries appeared to be the result of domestic violence and the victim and a suspect know each other, police said.

The 26-year-old woman told police she was walking along Arlington Boulevard near Gallows Road around 11 p.m. Monday when a white van pulled up next to her and a man pulled her inside the van. As she struggled to escape from the van, her kidnapper pushed her out of the vehicle near the intersection of Fairfax Boulevard and Chain Bridge Road, she told police.
