Would-be bank robber changes mind

A man who claimed to be armed with a gun was ready to rob a Silver Spring bank. He passed a teller a demand note — then left with neither saying a word, nor getting any cash.

Montgomery County police described the attempted armed robbery as a head scratcher.

The man entered the BB&T bank at 11200 Viers Mill Road around noon on Feb. 1, police said. He posed as a customer, waiting in line until he could pass a teller a demand note that implied he had a gun. Then he left.

“We don’t know why he went that far and then left,” police spokeswoman Melanie Brenner said.

Police described the would-be robber as a black man in his 30s. He’s about 5 feet 9 inches tall and was wearing a black coat, black knit hat, bluejeans, glasses and gloves.
