Va. man guilty in bribery case
A Chantilly man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to accept bribes from Iraqi contractors while he was working in Baghdad with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Thomas Manok, 50, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in Alexandria. Court records say he conspired with Iraqi contractors to accept cash bribes in exchange for recommending that the Army Corps of Engineers approve their contracts. He agreed to receive $10,000 from a contractor building a school, court documents say.
Toddler drowns at Reston hotel
Police are investigating the drowning death of a 1-year-old girl in a Reston hotel bathtub.
Fairfax County police said officers responded to the Westin Hotel located at 11750 Sunrise Valley Drive at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday for a report of a drowning. Officers found the body of Wreef Wafy Almutiri inside a hotel room.
Her parents were at the hotel when responders arrived, police said. Officer Bud Walker, a Fairfax County police spokesman, said it is “too soon to say” whether authorities consider the death suspicious.
No charges have been placed and the child had not suffered any other apparent trauma, Walker said.
Police probe Forestville sex assaults
Prince George’s County police are investigating two sexual assaults in Forestville and working to determine whether the attacks are connected.
The most recent happened at 10 p.m. Friday in the area of Pennsylvania Avenue and Walters Lane. The victim was approached from behind and taken to a wooded area, where she was sexually assaulted. The suspect fled on foot.
The first incident happened at about midnight on Sept. 6 in the 6200 block of Surrey Service Drive. The victim was approached from behind and, after a short struggle, the victim was able to escape.
