REP. ANGIE CRAIG SAYS SHE WAS ‘VERY LUCKY’ NOT TO BE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ATTACK
Court records show that Hamlin has a criminal history that spans over nearly a decade, according to CBS News. Several of the incidents and arrests occurred in close proximity to the U.S. Capitol grounds and Hamlin is believed to be homeless. His arrest record began in 2015 with a drug case, which he pled guilty.
A court filing from November 2022 stated that Hamlin became combative with Capitol police after officers spotted Hamlin lying on the ground. He bit one officer, spit blood at another, and kicked another in the groin. Weeks before that, Hamlin was accused of stealing frozen food and menthol cigarettes from a Capitol Hill supermarket.
The charges in the theft case were dropped after Hamlin pleaded guilty to the blood-spitting assault case and was sentenced to 35 days in jail. He was released about two weeks before he allegedly attacked Craig.
Hamlin also pleaded guilty to engaging in a lewd, obscene sexual act while in northwest Washington D.C. late last year. Hamlin failed to appear in court, prompting a bench warrant for his arrest. Other bench warrants for failing to appear in court originate from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. dating back to 2017.

On Thursday, Hamlin allegedly demanded that Craig let him into her apartment shortly after 7 a.m. so he could use her bathroom. When she refused, he attacked her, and Craig said in a statement that she then threw coffee at Hamlin, allowing her to exit the elevator and yell for help. Hamlin fled the scene and was eventually arrested later that day.
“My morning coffee really saved the day yesterday, but not exactly how I expected it to,” Craig’s statement read. “On a serious note, I will also say that I was very, very lucky that I was not more injured — and I’ll have more to say about that soon.”
