Police seek suspect in armed College Park heist

Police are looking for the man who robbed a College Park bank at gunpoint and then had a dye pack explode on him.

A man entered the M&T Bank located at Knox Road and Yale Avenue at about 12:15 p.m. Thursday. He approached the teller, brandished a handgun and demanded money, according to Prince George’s County police and the University of Maryland Department of Public Safety.

The teller gave the armed man an unspecified amount of money. The suspect then fled the bank on foot, police said.

The cash was in a bag that contained a red dye pack, authorities said. Such security packs explode with dye when activated, marking a suspect and the stolen bills.

After the suspect left the bank, witnesses told police they saw the pack explode and smoke coming out of the pocket where he had put the cash.

No one was injured in the robbery.

Police described the suspect as a black man with a light complexion who is 5 feet 6 inches or 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 135 to 150 pounds.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing a red Texas Rangers baseball cap and a blue polo shirt with a white diagonal stripe on the front and blue jeans.

No suspects have been identified.

Police said the incident is not believed to be connected to a series of robberies that occurred in the College Park area in early September.

Anyone with information about the bank robbery is asked to call the Prince George’s County police robbery unit at 301-772-4905. Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). People can also submit a tip by sending a text message to CRIMES (274637).
