Hearing set for Md. couple in bank robbery

A young Maryland couple faces a preliminary hearing this week for an armed bank robbery that police say they committed in late August.

Police say Anthony J. Young, 24, robbed a Frederick County bank at knifepoint and his pregnant girlfriend, 18-year-old Jenna R. Baker, served as the getaway driver.

A Frederick County District Court judge is scheduled to decide at a hearing Wednesday whether there is enough evidence against the two Jefferson residents for the case to go to trial.

Police say Young entered the Middletown Valley Bank at 3848 Jefferson Pike at about 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 31. Authorities say he demanded money, used a knife to cut phone lines at the bank, hit a bank teller in the face and stole the teller’s wallet.

After obtaining cash, Young allegedly fled into Baker’s tan 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Police say Young obtained more than $20,000 in the robbery but dropped more than $5,000 of it as he ran to the car.

At a bail review hearing earlier this month, Young told the judge that Baker had played no part in the robbery, the Frederick News-Post reported.

“She had nothing to do with it,” Young said at the hearing. “She’s seven months pregnant.”

Authorities searched her residence at McDaniel College, where she was a sophomore, after the robbery. Police also searched her vehicle and the hotel room where Young was staying.

Young and Baker each face 12 charges in connection with the incident, including robbery, assault and theft.

At their initial hearing, Young was ordered held without bond. Baker is being held on $500,000 bond.
