Three people have been hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting at Evergreen High School near Denver.
The shooter, a male, died of “self-inflicted injuries,” police said, and a fourth person was also hospitalized with unknown injuries.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to confirm the news. A 911 call came in around noon local time about the incident, they said. Authorities also suggested the shooter is in high school.
“This is the scariest thing you could ever think could happen,” said Jacki Kelley, public information officer with JCSO. “Honestly, I don’t know if our suspect is old enough to even drive.”
JCSO confirmed the news in a post on X.
“JCSO confirming a shooting at Evergreen High School. At least two students have been shot and are enroute to the hospital. Media staging at Evergreen Lake. Stay tuned for more,” the office wrote on X.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers responded to the incident. The school is 28 miles southwest of Denver and was on lockdown.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is on scene. “We’re aware of the tragic situation unfolding near Denver. The FBI is on scene and in full support of local authorities to ensure everyone’s safety,” he wrote on X.
Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) reacted to the shooting shortly after it became public.
“I am closely monitoring the situation at Evergreen High School and am getting live updates. State Troopers are supporting local law enforcement in responding to this situation. Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community,” he said in a statement.
