Teacher charged with assaulting first-graders

A Montgomery County first-grade teacher has been charged with nine counts of second-degree assault. A male student at Greencastle Elementary School in Silver Spring came forward in January claiming that Susan Lee Burke had physically abused him on numerous occasions. Further investigations by the Montgomery County Police Family Crimes Division determined there were eight more victims.

All of the victims were 6 to 7 years old and claimed Burke had choked, kicked, punched and/or scratched them. All of the victims reported that the events took place on campus during school hours.

Burke, 35, was arrested in her home on Tuesday morning.

Family Crimes detectives have requested that anyone with information regarding inappropriate contact between Burke and a minor to contact the Family Crimes Division at 240-773-5400. Callers may remain anonymous.
