On this day, Nov. 24, in 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald was shot and killed by Jack Ruby on live television two days after Oswald assassinated President Kennedy.
Oswald was a U.S. Marine who defected to the Soviet Union and later returned to the United States. He was originally arrested on suspicion of killing a Dallas police officer, and although Oswald denied killing Kennedy, the Warren Commission later concluded he had.
Ruby was a Dallas nightclub owner. He died in prison in 1967 and said he killed Oswald in the basement of the Dallas police headquarters on the spur of the moment. But conspiracy theorists believe Ruby was hired by mobsters to assassinate Oswald in an effort to keep a mob-backed presidential assassination conspiracy under wraps.
