Former Army private sentenced for having child porn
A 21-year-old Lorton man who pleaded guilty to having child pornography on his digital music player while serving in the Army at Fort Knox, Ky., has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
In April 2008, Pvt. Kevin Rendon’s bags were searched as he left Fort Knox, having been discharged for medical reasons, prosecutors said. In his bag, officials found the child porn-containing player and arrested him. They later searched the Lorton home where he lived with his mother and found thousands of child pornographic images on his computer there.
Electrical fire displaces 80 in Silver Spring
An overloaded extension chord burst into flames in a Silver Spring apartment building, displacing 80 residents, a Montgomery County fire department spokesman said.
Firefighters were able to contain the flames to one apartment in the 12-story Pineway Towers on the 8300 block of Piney Branch Road on Saturday night, but had to evacuate the entire building due to heavy smoke, the spokesman said. One person was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Police seek information in early morning crash
Montgomery County police are trying to determine why a 27-year-old man from Potomac lost control of his car and slammed into a tree.
Pedro Canuto is in serious condition after crossing the double yellow line on Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda and hitting the tree shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday. He was heading west at the time.

Burglar subdued by residents
A man is accused of breaking into his neighbor’s Springfield home and then getting on top of a 49-year-old woman who was asleep on the couch, Fairfax County police said. The woman woke up and struggled with 39-year-old George Mills, police said. Family members in other areas of the home heard her and subdued the suspect until police arrived.
