Nick Reiner showed up to court on Wednesday for his arraignment wearing a blue suicide prevention vest after prosecutors charged him with killing his parents, film director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
The 32-year-old allegedly killed his parents on Sunday after reportedly creating a stir at a holiday party. Police arrested him hours later and booked him in jail Monday.
Little happened in court on Wednesday. Reiner stared straight ahead behind a glass wall with shackles on in the courtroom. He did not enter a plea, and his high-profile lawyer, Alan Jackson, agreed with prosecutors to push off the arraignment until Jan. 7.
A mass of reporters and cameras awaited Jackson as he walked out to speak. He first acknowledged the “devastating tragedy” surrounding the Reiner family, but asked observers to hold their judgment.
“There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case,” he said.
“They need to be thoroughly but very carefully dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed. We ask that during this process you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward, not with a rush to judgment, not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity and with the respect that this system and this process deserves and that the family deserves,” he added.
Jackson previously said Nick Reiner was scheduled to have his arraignment Tuesday, but was not medically cleared to travel to court. It’s unclear if that’s related to his suicide prevention vest.
Nick Reiner has struggled with drug addiction in the past and was living with his parents during the time he allegedly murdered them. He had been in a fluctuating housing situation for years, going homeless at points in his life.
The murders of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, stunned the world. An outpouring of support came in from political figures and the Hollywood community for the famed film director, who directed Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, and Misery.
While most figures mourned them, President Donald Trump took issue with Rob Reiner’s past opposition of him. He said Rob Reiner had “Trump derangement syndrome” and suggested his death came about because of the alleged ailment.

The president drew criticism from elected Republicans and Democrats alike for the statement. When asked about his comments, he stood firm. “Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned,” Trump said of Reiner.
Trump has not commented on Nick Reiner.
