Derrick Ronald Young may look familiar to loyal readers of The Washington Examiner. That’s because Young, 40, was featured as a Most Wanted fugitive in September in connection with an armed robbery of a Dupont Circle business. U.S. marshals deputies said Young remains on the run, but they’ve developed new leads and are asking The Examiner’s readers again to help bring him to justice.
Law enforcement officials say Young has been seen recently in D.C. and is now sporting a beard. They are also offering a $500 reward.
“Young has progressively become more violent, committing armed robbery and putting people’s lives in danger,” said U.S. Marshals Deputy Bob Hoffmaster. “We need the community’s help in capturing him before anyone gets hurt.”
On July 10, shortly before 6 p.m., police said Young entered the Claude Taylor Photo Gallery, located at 1627 Connecticut Ave. NW, and pretended to buy a photograph.
At the counter, he ordered the employee to open the cash register and said he had a gun. He placed his hands under his shirt and indicated he had a weapon, police said.
The employee opened the register and gave the robber about $250 in cash. The robber fled on foot with a paper bag full of money.
Police said Young is also wanted in the robbery of a taxi cab driver, and is wanted for questioning in other taxi robberies.
On May 20, D.C. police said Young took a taxi from Union Station to the 1200 block of Kirby Street, NW, near Mount Vernon Square. Young pulled a knife from his bag, held it to the driver then robbed him of his cash and fled.
Young is listed as being 5-feet-10 and 185 pounds.
Anyone with information on Young’s whereabouts is urged to call Hoffmaster at 202-345-7036 or the U.S. Marshals Service at 301-489-1717 or 800-336-0102.
The Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, run by the U.S. Marshals Service, is composed of 30 federal, state and local agencies from Baltimore to Norfolk. The unit has captured more than 33,000 wanted fugitives since its creation in 2004.
