Transgendered woman shot to death in D.C.

A 23-year-old transgendered woman was shot and killed in the District, but police said there is no indication that the slaying was a hate crime. At around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 6100 block of Dix Street NE, the victim was approached by two men and words were exchanged, police said. One of the men pulled out a handgun and fatally shot the victim, identified by police as Myles McLean, of the Trinidad neighborhood in NE D.C. Capt. Michael Farish, head of the homicide branch, said the exchange was brief and there was no announcement of a robbery and nothing mentioned about sexual orientation. There was not enough information at this time to say whether McLean was killed because she was transgendered, Farish said. One of the assailants was described as a short dark-complected man with a handgun. The other was taller and light-complected, police said.

Officer injured in collision

An Arlington County police officer was seriously injured in an early-morning crash in the Ballston area. Police said the officer was responding to a call when the cruiser collided with another car at the intersection of North Glebe Road and Washington Boulevard shortly after 2:15 a.m. The officer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The officer is 40-years-old and has worked for the police department for about five years. The driver of the other car, a 21-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries, police said.
