Man gets 26 years in deadly stabbing

A Baltimore man was sentenced Tuesday to 26 years for fatally stabbing a woman at her home in Northeast D.C.

John William Smith Jr., 47, pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court in January to second-degree murder while armed in the death of 47-year-old Elaine Coleman.

Police said Smith stabbed Coleman 41 times, possibly with scissors, at her home on 552 23rd Place NE in December. The two had been in a relationship. Before he killed her, Smith had told witnesses that he was angry because Coleman was getting back with her ex-boyfriend.

In 2005, Smith was charged with first-degree murder for a stabbing death of a victim who was killed with a pair of scissors, police said. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the case in 2006 and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
