Former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire is vowing to fight misdemeanor battery charges after his arrest Sunday for an alleged domestic violence incident with one of his daughters.
Stoudemire, who last played for the NBA in 2016, was arrested early Sunday in Miami, Florida, after allegedly punching and slapping one of his teenage daughters, according to Miami-Dade County online records. The 40-year-old, who played for the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks, refused to answer questions about the situation by police and was then arrested. His bond was set at $1,500, and an arraignment hearing was set for next month. The father of four was also hit with a no-contact order for the daughter involved in the incident.

Stoudemire denied the charges in a statement posted to Instagram late Sunday.
“Over the last 24 hours, an incident at my family home led to my being charged with assaulting my daughter. It is an allegation based on a report that does not square with the facts,” Stoudemire said, going on to reference his Jewish faith.
“As the investigation unfolds, facts will show the allegations to be groundless as my daughter’s medical condition is not the result of being assaulted by a father who is nearly 7 feet tall and weighs 250 pounds,” he continued. “I could never see myself assaulting any person, especially my children. I respect, protect, and love my family, particularly my children. As a father, I ask for your grace as we secure our space and privacy.”

Records from the incident, reviewed in full by the Miami Herald, show that police were dispatched to Stoudemire’s condominium in response to an alleged custody dispute. Stoudemire’s ex-wife, Alexis Stoudemire, told police she received a photo from her daughter “which shows the victim crying and blood running down her face.”
The alleged victim, who is either Stoudemire’s 17- or 14-year-old daughter, was in her room in the NBA great’s Miami apartment when her father came in and accused her of talking back to her grandmother. Stoudemire then allegedly punched her on the right side of her jaw and slapped her in the face, leaving her with a bloody nose, before repeatedly slapping the “left side of her body,” according to the report.
