Man in black suit robs D.C. bank

A bearded man in a black suit and golf hat robbed a downtown D.C. bank Tuesday morning.

At 10 a.m., the man walked into the United Bank on the 1600 block of K Street Northwest and passed a note demanding cash. He took the money and was last seen walking north on the 1000 block of 17th Street NW.

The robber was described as a black male, in his late 30s or early 40s, with a full beard. He was about 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds. Police are offering a reward of up to $10,000. Anyone who has information regarding this case is asked to call police at 202-727-9099.

Violent crime drops in Prince George’s County

Violent crime in Prince George’s County has dropped nearly 10 percent in the first half of this year from the first six months of 2008, Police Chief Roberto Hylton said.

Driving down violent crime was a 16.7 percent reduction in homicides from 60 in the first half of 2008 to 50 between January and June of this year, Hylton said.

Hylton pointed to closer relationships between county police and community police forces as well as the influence of community leaders as the driving force behind the lower crime rate.

Police have obtained a warrant charging Acie Montague Watts, of the 132000 block of Sapphire Ridge Place, with felony threats to bomb and making threatening phone calls.

 Police said the 5-foot-10 Watts made the calls July 12 and he has not been found. Anyone with information should call 703-792-4159.

Man trying to cross Potomac disappears

A man who attempted to swim across the Potomac River went missing Tuesday, a Montgomery County fire department spokesman said.

A rescue team was searching for the man after he disappeared while attempting the crossing with several other men, the spokesman said.
