A former computer systems administrator for the Navy’s Naval Research Laboratory in D.C. has been charged with the theft of more than $1.6 million in electronic equipment from the D.C. agency, according to federal charging documents.

From 1997 to 2007, Victor R. Papagno, 40, stole nearly 20,000 pieces of computer and office equipment belong to the Navy, prosecutors claim in charging papers. Papagno is scheduled to plead guilty to theft of government property on Oct. 1. Papagno, who began working at the lab in 1989, took the equipment home for his own personal use and for family and friends.
