Fairfax police probe lottery ticket scam

Fairfax County police are on the lookout for people who are conducting a lottery ticket scam in area parking lots. Police this week released surveillance footage of suspects in one incident, in which a man was approached in a Costco parking lot in Springfield on Oct. 25. Two men — one white, with a Russian accent, short hair and glasses; the other Hispanic with a small build — told him they had a winning lottery ticket but couldn’t cash it because of their immigration status.

The men said they would give the victim the ticket, which he could then cash, if he paid them $30,000. The two suspects disappeared after the man went to a bank and handed over cash.

Police say four similar incidents have been reported in area parking lots this fall.
