Officers kill pit bull during attack

A 6-year-old District of Columbia girl is recovering at home from bite wounds inflicted by pit bull Wednesday evening in Southeast, police said.

Plain-clothed officers walking along the 200 block of 11th Street SE spotted the dog viciously mauling the girl and attempted to distract the pit bull, police said. But when it turned and charged the undercover officer, they opened fire and killed the dog.

The identities of the two officers are being withheld due to the nature of their assignments. Police are conducting a follow-up investigation on the officers’ firing their weapons.

The girl had bites on her arms, neck and head and was released from the hospital Thursday morning.

The dog came charging from a house near where the girl was mauled, and charges may be filed against the dog’s owners who had allowed the animal to run loose, police said.
