Crime History: Notorious outlaw Claude Dallas re-captured by FBI

On this day, March 8, in 1987, FBI agents captured a notorious outlaw who escaped from an Idaho prison where he was sentenced for killing two game wardens.

The exploits of self-styled mountain man Claude Dallas have spawned two books, a song, a TV movie and groupies who call themselves the Dallas Cheerleaders.

In 1981, Dallas fatally shot two officers who had come to arrest him for poaching bobcats.

Dallas was convicted in both deaths and sentenced to 30 years.

On Easter Sunday 1986, he escaped from prison by cutting two fences.

He was recaptured a year later, but beat the escape rap by convincing a jury he had to flee because prison guards were looking to kill him.

He was released from prison in 2005.
