Police: Man arrested for hitting mother with hammer

A man was arrested for assaulting his mother with a hammer in Annapolis, police said.

Robert N. Benscoter, 33, of Annapolis, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, Anne Arundel County police said.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court. Police said that Benscoter apparently used a hammer to repeatedly hit his 61-year-old mother in the head and torso.

Benscoter’s mother ran to a neighbor and called police. Benscoter fled before police arrived, but police said he was taken into custody about an hour-and-a-half after the assault when he was located in a heavily wooded area off Commanders Way.

The victim was taken to a shock trauma center in Baltimore where she is in serious but stable condition.
