Illegal immigrant get life in prison for killing woman, 83 A 38-year-old illegal immigrant who with his cousin burned an 83-year-old Wheaton woman to death in an attempt to cover up a check fraud was sentenced to life without parole Tuesday.

Jose Alvarado and his cousin were convicted of killing Lila Meizell. The incident took place in November 2008, just weeks after the men added a zero to a $120 check Meizell had given them for landscape work.

Alvarado killed Meizell because he feared she would report the fraud to police and he would be deported back to El Salvador, authorities said.

Ramon Alvarado also was sentenced to life.

Downtown D.C. businesses

locked down after threat

Several downtown buildings near the White House were locked down temporarily after a man threatened to shoot someone, officials said.

Around noon Tuesday, a man carrying a green bag approached a Golden Triangle BID ambassadors on Connecticut Avenue near Dupont Circle and said he had a gun and intended to shoot someone. He fled south on Connecticut. Authorities issued an alert to area businesses and some buildings went into a lockdown.

The man is 50 to 60 years old. He is black and weighs about 150 pounds. He wore black jeans and black shoes.

Father beat 4-month-old son, police say

Sonny Mauricio Rivas-Loza has been charged with felony child abuse and malicious wounding after Prince William County police say he beat his 4-month-old son, causing the infant to have seizures and other medical emergencies. Authorities say Rivas-Loza abused his infant for two months before the 4-month-old was hospitalized on Dec. 15.

Alexandria bakery shooting suspect identified

Alexandria police have identified 50-year-old Jose Russo as the man who allegedly shot and killed a man and seriously injured a woman at the Del Ray bakery. Russo shot and killed himself after the Friday night attack.
