Fatal fire at senior center

A 63-year-old woman has died in a fire at a senior center in Southwest Washington. Around 11:20 p.m. Monday, firefighters were called to the Greenleaf Senior Apartments on the 1200 block of Delaware Avenue and encountered a blaze at a fourth-floor apartment, said D.C. fire spokesman Pete Piringer. Firefighters rescued a woman suffering from burns and possible smoke inhalation from the room and took her to a hospital, where she died, Piringer said. The fire was put out in about 15 minutes, and the damage was listed at about $25,000.

Drug smuggler sentenced

A Guatemalan drug supplier was sentenced to 11 years in prison because of a scheme to smuggle cocaine and heroin inside working car batteries, the U.S. attorney for Maryland announced Tuesday. Cesar Molina-Maldonado, 40, smuggled more than 300 pounds of drugs into the United States and supplied large quantities of cocaine and heroin to drug dealers in Maryland. The ring used the drug money to purchase vehicles at auto auctions, which were then transported to Guatemala, with the remaining money hidden in the vehicle.

Fox in skeleton costume is returned to owner

A silver cross fox wearing a skeleton costume has been returned to its owner, Fairfax County Police said. Animal control officers had seized the fox, named Swiper, and arrested its 20-year-old owner after she took the animal to a Reston mall for Halloween. Swiper was reunited with its owner after Virginia officials determined he was a domesticated breed and the owner didn’t need a specific permit for the pet.

Lawyer gets 15 years for making child porn

A 46-year-old Fort Washington man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday for producing child pornography. The FBI collected photographs of child pornography from Ernesto Cacanindin’s desk at a D.C. law firm where he used to work. Cacanindin’s former colleagues found the pictures when cleaning out his desk after he was dismissed.
