Ex-police officer charged with sexually assaulting teen boy

A former Dumfries police officer who opened an ice cream shop was charged with abusing a then-teenage boy who attended the middle school where he was a wrestling coach, police said.

Joseph Ruhren, 41, was charged with 12 counts of forcible sodomy, four counts of indecent liberties, four counts of carnal knowledge, two counts of crimes against nature and one count of aggravated sexual battery, according to the Prince William County Police Department.

In August 2010, the victim told police that Ruhren sexually assaulted him from 1996 to 2001, when the victim was between 12 to 16 years old. The victim, who is now 27, attended Graham Park Middle School, where Ruhren coached wrestling, police said.

Ruhren is accused of sexually assaulting the victim at his places of residence in Prince William County, police said.

Ruhren was served arrest warrants Wednesday at Rappahannock Regional Jail in Stafford, Va., where he is serving a sentence on unrelated charges, police said.

Dumfries Police Capt. Becca Edwards said Ruhren was employed with the department from 1996 to 2004.
